FOXBORO, Mass. (WPRI) — After missing the entire 2017-18 season due to injury, New England Patriots star wideout Julian Edelman may also miss the start of the team’s 2018-19 campaign for an entirely different reason.
The NFL on Thursday announced Edelman is facing a four-game suspension for violating the league’s policy on performance-enhancing drugs.
Edelman has been participating in the team’s offseason workouts. The news of his suspension was first reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Field Yates minutes after the Patriots’ media availability concluded.
The ruling is under appeal, though it’s rare for this type of ruling to be overturned.
If the suspension is upheld, Edelman would miss the team’s first four games against the Texans, Jaguars, Lions and Dolphins.
The Patriots have no shortage of wide receivers and pass-catching running backs, but it’s unclear at this time who will step up to fill the slot role since the obvious choice, Danny Amendola, signed a two-year deal with Miami earlier this year.
