PROVIDENCE, RI (WPRI) — This week’s Cardi’s Furniture & Mattresses Hometown Sports Hero is Marquis Buchanan.

The Gatorade Football Player of the Year caught 63 passes for 1,143 yards and 10 touchdowns, while adding another 399 yards on the ground with 8 scores, production that helped Classical bring home their first D-II Football title. The Senior then closed his Fall by committing to play at the University of Rhode Island next year.

“The process was up and down for me,” Buchanan said. “URI was the first to offer me back last Spring so it’s been up and down. I had schools calling, saying ‘We’re waiting, we’re waiting,’ and it came down to Sacred Heart and URI and it came to the hometown school because they believed in me first. So I bought in to what they have for me.”

The Rams have two former wide receivers on NFL rosters, Aaron Parker with Carolina and Isaiah Coulter with the Bears. It’s a path that Marquis hopes to follow once he earns his opportunity in Kingston.

“Yeah definitely, especially with Coach (Donovan) Varner,” Buchanan said. “He has the experience, brought all those guys through, to the next level. And I know I can be a guy that gets to the next level and be on there.”

“He definitely has the potential,” said Purple Head Coach Kris McCall. “He has to own the process like a science and if he does that? A number of schools, when Marquis went to visit, Rutgers in particular, thought he was that type of talent.

“If he focuses on football, he will be a huge prospect. You’ll be hearing about him on the next level, after college.”
