EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — With temperatures in the teens expected Thursday morning, many local Thanksgiving Day football games have been rescheduled or outright canceled.
Some schools decided to hold their games on Wednesday while others postponed them until the weekend.
“If gets too extreme cold, like tomorrow – it’s predicted to be 17 with a 2-degree feel-like factor – exercising in that is bad for the heart, it’s bad for the lungs,” North Providence High School football coach Glenn Williams said. “To take that chance for a game that’s a non-league game – yes, it’s tradition to play on Thanksgiving, I get the whole part of that – but, unfortunately, we have to take the children’s safety into hand.”
Rogers and Tiverton canceled their game Wednesday afternoon, leaving just three on the schedule for Thursday: Burrillville vs. Ponaganset, Cumberland vs. Woonsocket, and Westerly vs. Stonington, Connecticut. All three games are scheduled for 10 a.m.
