The Holiday season is nothing short of magical. As adults, we get so rushed with the day to day that we forget about the simple joys that come from putting up the lights, hanging decorations, and trimming the tree. Regardless of our age, the holidays bring us back to when we were a child. Making holiday memories can be simple, easy, and not so stressful.

We spoke with Tracy Martin-Turgeon- Director of The Children’s Workshop who shared ideas for your family to try.Let Your Children Get Involved:

  • To make this Christmas a safe holiday for the little ones, move glass ornaments up high and place things that are breakable where little hands cannot reach. Create a place where children can have fun and remember these traditions that you create.

Make Christmas Cookies:

  • Baking is something even the youngest child can help do. Make the same cookies each year to start a tradition!

Make a Basket of Books:

  • Each night during the month of December, let your child (or children) pick a wrapped book out of a basket. Then have each family member sit together to read the book. This can be a book that you already have that you haven’t read at all or in a while. It doesn’t have to be a newly purchased book. What a great family tradition to start!
  • If you have a ton of pine cones in your yard and don’t know what to do with them, why not collect them and make some gifts? You can paint them and sprinkle cinnamon on them and put a bunch in a basket. The smell will make the area of the home smell so nice! You can also melt candle wax in a double boiler, add wick to the pine cone, dip the pine cones, and you have fire starters for a fire place— cute gift idea!

Visit the Hospital or Nursing Home:

  • Have your children make cards or simple gifts. Then go visit a hospital or nursing home and bring the gifts and cards you made. You can make Christmas ornaments with homemade play-doh. Depending on where you go, you could bring some paint and paint brushes and have the people you visit paint the ornament with your child. They can make cards there as well, and sing songs. This will not only make their day, but also your child’s.

Some Simple Homemade Gifts:

  • Go to the dollar store and pick up some wine glasses and spray paint them any color you would like. Then, decorate upside down. Once dry, put a tea light on top and you have a homemade gift! If you are good at sewing, you can make hand warmers or warmers for your muscles. The ideas are endless; you just need to think outside of the box.

The idea of making Holiday memories is to pick something that works for your family. It can be little things at home, vacations, or family meals, among other things. Whatever you choose to do, be consistent and do it every year. Create memories that someday your children will want to do with their families. You just may bring a smile and a tradition that will be talked about every year!
