Most of us take the air we breathe for granted. Inhaling and exhaling is second nature, and the oxygen we need to power our everyday activity is always there.

We never have to think about it. Mike Reilly’s mother, Madeline, doesn’t have that luxury. She has been diagnosed with scleroderma.

There are two types of scleroderma – localized and systemic.

Madeline has systemic scleroderma which can involve the skin, esophagus, gastrointestinal tract, lungs, kidneys, heart and other internal organs. It can also affect blood vessels, muscles, and joints.

The tissues of involved organs become hard and fibrous, causing them to function less efficiently.
