It’s a perfect time of year to enjoy the sci-fi, fantasy, and horror genres. The Vortex Film Festival will air 58 films from 17 different countries this week at various locations throughout Rhode Island. Shawn Drywa, Vortex Program Director, and Shawn Quirk, RI International Film Festival Program Director discuss the details on the event.

Zombied | Directed by: Matthew Van Vorst | 16 min. USA, 2018

A normal night shift at Priced Less Supermarket–restocking, fighting social injustice, and transitioning into a zombie.


The Comet | Directed by: Bård Røssevold | 72 min. Norway, 2017

The Comet follows 20-year-old Gustav and his search to find his father who mysteriously disappeared 12 years ago when a comet passed close to earth.


The Legend of Rasputin | Directed by: Jamie Shannon | 13 min. Canada, 2017

It is a dark, historical comedy about the first tabloid star Grigori Rasputin, presenting a chapter in his life through puppets. Produced by Heather Henson.



Revelation – the City of Haze | Directed by: Qichao Mao | 14 min. China, 2017

After witnessed his mother’s death in a riot, the boy named Mai broke down and could not remember his own name since. One day, a girl named Yi, who’s a scavenger, found Mai in a garbage can and brought him back to the City of Haze.
