Woman dead after early-morning house fire in New Bedford

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) — A woman is dead after an early-morning house fire in New Bedford.

Fire crews were called to Sycamore Street just before 3 a.m. on Saturday.

When they arrived, they found fire coming from the back of the home, spreading to the roof. After entering the the home, they found the body of a woman on the floor.

“I woke up through the sirens coming down the street,” said Darin Davis, who lives next door to where the fire happened. “Fire trucks, the streets were blocked off, smoke was coming out of this back area of the building. One lady she ran down the street she was screaming and crying hysterically.”

Davis said it took firefighters some time to fully extinguish the flames.

“They had to go in there several times because there was quite a bit of hot spots,” he added. “I saw sparks coming out all of a sudden and they were like oh my God it’s still on fire and they were going in with the hoses, and hosing it down.”

The cause of the fire is still under investigation and the victim’s name has not yet been released. There were no other injuries.

Fire officials say the two other residents are staying with friends and family.
