Why thunderstorms are rare on the West Coast

(WPRI) — Thunderstorms are fairly common on the East Coast, especially during the summer months. But, they’re actually rare on the West Coast.

That’s because currents generally make for chilly waters in the northeastern Pacific – which is why many people need a wet suit to swim in Southern California.

Breezes off the Pacific often keep things a little cooler on the West Coast, which can rob potential storms of their energy.
