WESTPORT, Mass. (WPRI) — Westport police are actively executing a search warrant in an animal cruelty investigation.

Officers were on scene at a property in the woods, off Route 177 all day on Tuesday.

According to officials, the land was found in deplorable condition with hundreds of animals on the property. More than five dozen animals had to be put down, we’ve learned.

The Boston Animal Rescue League took dozens of other animals into custody.

Environmental police were also on the scene because oil tankers were found on the property.

Police said the investigation could take several days.
