Westerly Yacht Club votes to keep male-only policy

News

WESTERLY, R.I. (WPRI) – The Westerly Yacht Club is dealing with the consequences of a recent vote that will allow their male-only policy to remain.

The club voted to continue to prevent women from becoming full-fledged members. Due to this vote, performer Dave Kane has cancelled his planned one-man comedy show booked for January at the club.

Kane said that he believes the members don’t grasp that their policy is wrong and he hopes that by pulling his performance the club will realize they are making a mistake and change their policy.

“I think they might be now and I’m hoping they’ll finally decide to change this,” said Kane.

A spokesman for Westerly Hospital says an event they have scheduled for Thursday will go on, but they will not book future events at the club until the policy changes.

The club allows wives of members to be non-voting associate members, however single women can not join and divorced women lose their status.Eyewitness News reached out to the club for comment but they have not yet responded.
