PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — After pleading guilty to charges of possessing and distributing child pornography, a Westerly man will now spend seven years and three months in federal prison.

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, court documents show Normand Asselin, 41, was first noticed by Google security personnel in May 2015. They told the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children that images of child pornography had been uploaded by email from a computer — in fact, an IP address — belonging to Normand Asselin. Rhode Island State Police executed a court-authorized search of his email account, and discovered Asselin had been sending and receiving images and video of child pornography. He was arrested in June 2015.

Later searches revealed more media on Asselin’s laptop computer, including some 1,250 images and 70 videos.

At sentencing, U.S. District Court Judge John J. McConnell, Jr., also ordered him to serve ten years supervised release after he finishes his prison term.
