NEWPORT, R.I. (WPRI) — Democratic vice presidential candidate Tim Kaine is scheduled to be in Rhode Island this weekend to raise money.
The Saturday fundraisers at two private homes are happening during Kaine’s second trip to Newport in less than a month.
He was attending a fundraiser at the Newport Shipyard on July 22 when he got the call from Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton asking him to be her running mate.
The first event is a cocktail reception Saturday afternoon at the home of retired Nortek CEO Richard Bready.
The second event is a formal dinner at the home of former Democratic Providence Mayor Joseph Paolino, who was ambassador to Malta under former President Bill Clinton.
Republican National Committee spokeswoman Natalie Strom weighed in on Kaine’s visit, issuing the following statement:
“This week saw a steady stream of bad headlines about the shady relationship between Clinton Foundation donors and Hillary Clinton’s State Department. Rhode Island Democrat insiders opening their wallets for face time with Tim Kaine is only a preview of the kind of pay-to-play politics that will continue in the White House if the Clinton-Kaine ticket is elected in November.”
Kaine is a U.S. senator and former governor of Virginia.
