HAUPPAUGE, N.Y. (AP) — A small plane carrying a father and daughter returning from visiting a college in Rhode Island has crash-landed in an industrial park in suburban New York. The man and his daughter have suffered only minor injuries.

The Federal Aviation Administration says the Cirrus SR22 went down Saturday in a grassy area in Hauppauge, on Long Island about 45 miles from Manhattan.

The plane was approaching Republic Airport in Farmingdale when the pilot reported an engine-related problem. The plane crashed 8 miles from the airport.

Pilot Louis Obergh and teenage daughter Rachel Obergh had traveled to visit the University of Rhode Island in Kingston, Rhode Island. He tells Newsday they “got very lucky.”

The FAA is investigating. The National Transportation Safety Board will try to determine what caused the crash.
