BOSTON (WPRI) – The Coast Guard Cutter Seneca returned to Boston Saturday after a successful deployment during which the crew interdicted $63 million worth of cocaine.
The cutter spent 70 days in the Eastern Pacific amd Florida Straits and steamed 15,000 miles.
During the two-month patrol, the ship and crew stopped five “go fast” boats and arrested 15 suspected drug traffickers carrying about 3.5 tons of cocaine. It’s estimated that the drugs have a street value of about $63 million.
Coast Guard officials said that patrols off the Central and South American coasts have seized more cocaine in the last year than during the previous two combined.
Besides the drug seizure, the cutter assisted more than 100 Cubans who were trying to sail to the United States on boats the Coast Guard called “unseaworthy.”
