WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Senate has passed a nearly $1.5 trillion Republican tax bill that’s historic in scope and an urgent political priority for President Donald Trump and the GOP.
The vote was 51-49, largely along party lines.
Not a single Democrat voted in favor of the legislation, which was crafted behind closed doors by Senate Republican leaders.
State Representative Bobby Nardolillo said the U.S. Senate has taken a, “historic step.”
“Now we have the example of a measure that promises to accelerate the U.S. Economy, for the benefit of all Americans,” Nardolillo said. “In that way this Bill is just like the Kennedy Tax Reform of the early 1960’s and the Reagan Tax Reform of the mid 1980’s.”
Nardolillo is running for U.S. Senate in 2018 against former Supreme Court Justice Bob Flanders and current Senator Sheldon Whitehouse.
“The only disappointing feature of this Senate action that I can see is the failure of Democrats like Senator Whitehouse (D-RI) to even consider it on its merits.” Nardolillo said. “I see that as a failure to take action on behalf of the people of our state and nation. But he and I will have our chance to debate that during the upcoming general election campaign.”
Whitehouse released the following statement shortly after the vote:
“TrumpTax is a scam. Tonight, while most Americans were sleeping, Senate Republicans voted to hike taxes on millions of middle-class families to pay for tax cuts for President Trump and his billionaire friends. This so-called ‘tax reform’ moves our nation in the wrong direction by every measure: it will send more American jobs overseas, increase health insurance premiums, explode our national debt, and pollute an already-complicated tax code with new loopholes and gifts for the very wealthy. It’s a giveaway to Republican donors, and the American people should take note.”
Flanders also tweeted about the vote, stating he is not happy with the the voting process and decisions should be made by, “both sides.”
Governor Gina Raimondo also weighed in on the tax plan:
“The Republican-Trump Tax Bill is an unconscionable handout to millionaires and billionaires paid for by working families from cities and towns like Cranston, Warwick, Providence and every other part of Rhode Island. Senate leaders forced a vote without any debate while Americans were fast asleep and the ballpoint ink on the amendments was barely dry.
“This bill puts Rhode Islanders’ access to affordable health insurance at risk and it will potentially threaten vital funding for public infrastructure, small business loans, job training and public education.
“As Governor, I will continue to stand with working Rhode Islanders. In recent years in our state, we’ve cut the car tax, increased the minimum wage and given retirees much needed tax relief. National Republican leaders and their standard-bearers in Rhode Island are giving the wealthiest people in our nation a tax cut while standing on the backs of working and middle class Rhode Island families.”
Senator Jack Reed also spoke out against Trump Tax, posting on Twitter that Republican’s refused to compromise.
The bill lays the bulk of its tax cuts on businesses and higher-earning individuals and gives more modest breaks to others.
