(WPRI) — A claim of sexual assault involving Judge Brett Kavanaugh, President Trump’s Supreme Court nominee, tied to Rhode Island, has already been recanted.

On Wednesday evening, a spokesperson for Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse confirmed he received a phone call about the allegation. He said the allegation was forwarded to the FBI for further investigation, and declined to comment further.

The man who called Whitehouse claimed his female friend was the victim of a sexual assault involving Kavanaugh and another man on a boat in Newport Harbor in 1985.

Kavanaugh was questioned by Senate staff about the accusation, and Kavanaugh denied the allegation.

Later Wednesday night, the man who made the claim reportedly recanted his story and apologized, saying he made a mistake.

The first woman to accuse Kavanaugh, Christine Blasey Ford, is scheduled to testify in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee Thursday.
