Uber to begin collecting sales tax

PROVIDENCE, R.I (WPRI) — As of July 1, ride sharing companies like Uber will begin collecting Rhode Island sales tax on all their trips.

This change is in line with regulations on these companies happening across the country.

Lawmakers are enforcing the tax, saying it’s only fair because traditional taxi cabs already pay the tax.

Uber says the 7% sales tax will be calculated on the gross fare.
