PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) – General Treasurer Seth Magaziner is looking for a new chief of staff after less than nine months on the job, has confirmed.

Andrew Roos, who started as then-Treasurer Gina Raimondo’s chief of staff in 2013 and stayed on when Magaziner succeeded here this year, confirmed on Wednesday that he is leaving the job effective Sept. 8.

Roos has accepted an undisclosed job in the private sector but will continue to serve Magaziner “in an advisory role,” according to a statement from the treasurer’s office.

“Treasurer Magaziner has built a great team in the department which will help him continue to be one of the rising stars in the national Democratic Party,” Roos said in a statement. “I will miss my friends on Team Treasury dearly and look forward to watching their continued success.”

Roos is a veteran political operative who managed Democrat Myrth York’s gubernatorial campaign in 2002 and later worked for Google’s political arm in Washington, D.C.

Jeff Padwa, Magaziner’s general counsel and deputy treasurer, will serve as acting chief of staff until a permanent successor for Roos is found, the statement said. Padwa previously served as Providence city solicitor under Mayor Angel Taveras.

Roos’s departure isn’t the only change confirmed by Magaziner aides Wednesday.

David Ortiz, director of communications for Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza, is leaving City Hall to take the same job in the general treasurer’s office, also effective Sept. 8, the statement said.

Ortiz has worked in City Hall communications continuously since Taveras took office in 2011 except during last year’s campaign, when he left to serve as director of communications on Elorza’s successful campaign for mayor against Buddy Cianci.

Ortiz will take over for Shana Autiello, Magaziner’s current director of communications, who told she is leaving the office to pursue other opportunities.

“I know we won’t miss a beat with Jeff Padwa leading the team, and I am extremely excited to welcome David Ortiz to our office as we continue our work to make the Rhode Island Treasurer’s office the best in the country,” Magaziner said in a statement.

Magaziner, a 32-year-old Democrat and son of longtime Bill Clinton confidante Ira Magaziner, was elected treasurer last November.

Elorza’s office said Evan England, the mayor’s press secretary, has been promoted to director of communications. “I am deeply grateful for David Ortiz’s service and wish him well on all future endeavors,” Elorza said in a statement.

England served as Magaziner’s campaign manager in his successful campaign for the treasurer’s office last year.Ted Nesi ( covers politics and the economy for He hosts Executive Suite and writes the Nesi’s Notes blog. Follow him on Twitter: @tednesi
