Traffic stop leads to drug trafficking charges for New Bedford man


NEW BEDFORD, Mass (WPRI) — A New Bedford man is scheduled to appear in court Monday following a drug bust in the city Saturday afternoon.

Following an investigation by Det. John Lagoa, members of the Organized Crime and Intelligence Bureau pulled over Eric Matthew DeSousa, 22, in a Volkswagen on Fair Street, at approximately 2 p.m. According to police, officers placed him under arrest after they found approximately 32 grams of heroin in his possession.

Following the arrest, detectives obtained three search warrants for DeSousa’s Volkswagen, his home at 21 Milford Street, and his parent’s home at 526 Bolton Street.

During these searches, police said officers found an additional 274 grams of heroin, $8716 in cash, seven cell phones, packing material, and a digital scale.

Police said the street value of the 306 grams of heroin is approximately $30,000.
