Tractor-trailer crash on I-95 sends driver to hospital

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Crews have cleared the scene of a tractor-trailer crash on a Providence highway.

The truck tipped over at about 6:30 p.m. Monday on I-95 North just before Exit 24 (Branch Avenue). Rhode Island State Police said it was loaded with blocks of granite.

The driver – later identified as Hery Portillo, 56, of Bayonne, NJ – was trapped as a result of the crash, according to police. He was transported to Rhode Island Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The crash caused heavy traffic backups in the area for about three hours.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
