Timeline: How Providence mill fire unfolded

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — On March 10, 2015 a massive fire broke out inside a mill building on Sims Ave. in Providence. Here’s a timeline of how the story unfolded in the first 24 hours.

March 11, 11:30 p.m.: The first reports of a fire came in. Upon arrival firefighters struck a second alarm. Before it was all over it would be a five-alarm fire.

March 12, 12 a.m.: The first ReportIt image is sent to the Eyewitness Newsroom, showing flames lighting up the Providence night sky.

Shortly after that, one of three walls collapses.

March 12, 3 a.m.: Eyewitness News learns that eight ladders and 13 engines from Providence and surrounding communities are on scene. By now, we know the building was empty.

March 12, sunrise: Crews are still battling the flames. Fire officials have confirmed one firefighter has been hurt, but the injuries are non-life threatening.

March 12, 8 a.m.: A haze hangs over Providence. The smoke can be seen by drivers during the morning commute.

March 12, 10:30 a.m.: Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza holds a briefing, commending the work of firefighters.

March 12 11 a.m.: The Rhode Island Dept. of Environmental Management declares air quality in Providence and East Providence as “very unhealthy.”March 12, 11:30 a.m.: Crews have been battling the fire for 12 hours. Crews say it’ll will likely burn for at least another day.

March 12, afternoon: City officials confirm the facility’s main building is a total loss and a second building will likely need to be torn town. A third building sustained water damage.
