Thousands turn out for fallen Weymouth officer’s wake

HANOVER, Mass. (WPRI) – A funeral is planned to honor the life of a fallen Weymouth police officer on Friday.

Sgt. Michael Chesna was killed in the line of duty July 15 in Weymouth after pursuing an erratic driver who police said eventually fled on foot, threw a rock at the officer, took his gun, and turned it on the officer and a female bystander.

The funeral service is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Saint Mary’s Church on Friday, the same church where the wake was.

Ahead of the police walk-through Thursday, thousands of police officers and other first responders lined up to pay their respect to their fallen brother.

Before Chesna’s career at Weymouth police, he served in the army, 187 10th Mountain Division, serving two tours of duty. He was awarded a Purple Heart. Chesna leaves behind his wife, Cindy, and two young children, Olivia and Jack.

Chesna’s dedication to serving the community was apparent in a letter he wrote during the admissions process for the police academy six years ago which read in part, “I have always felt that I have a responsibility to give back to my community and my country, and felt that being a police officer was the best way for me to do so.”

The community has rallied behind Chesna’s family, and that includes help from a national organization.

The Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation, a national foundation established after the 9/11 attacks to support first responders and their families, announced Wednesday they will pay off the mortgage on Sgt. Chesna’s family home.

John Hodge, who’s a member of Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers, is one of many who advocated for the Chesna family.

“We do not want to have them move,” Hodge said. “We don’t want to have them find new friends. We don’t want them to find a new school. They’ve had enough upset.”

This is just the beginning of a huge fundraising effort. The donor is calling on the community to raise the rest.
