PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — More than 17,000 people gathered in Providence Sunday to raise awareness and money for breast cancer research.

The downtown area was draped in pink as breast cancer survivors and those who have been affected by the disease took part in a three-mile walk for Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. Hundreds of volunteers were also on hand to help with the event and cheer on the walkers.

Organizers say more than 234,000 people will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year.

“We are serving patients right here in Rhode Island,” said Kelley Lord from Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. “We are giving patients rides to and from treatment if they can’t provide that for themselves, so there’s a lot of great things that the organization does nationally, but also on a local level as well.”

The organization hopes to raise $800,000 by the end of the year. According to its website, more than $450,000 has been raised so far, and new donations are still being added to the total.

“We can’t do it alone, we don’t want anyone else to do it alone as well, so we’re in this together,” Lord added. “We are really trying to make sure that no one else has to hear those words – you have cancer.”

The event also featured music, entertainment and food, and it was emceed by Eyewitness News Anchor Shannon Hegy. WPRI 12 and Fox Providence are proud media sponsors of the walk.Click here for more information and to donate to Making Strides Against Breast Cancer.
