Swansea police arrest 4 on weapons charges

SWANSEA, Mass. (WPRI) — Four people have been charged after a routine motor vehicle stop in Swansea.

According to the Swansea Police Department, an officer responding to a medical call Friday reported seeing a gray Dodge vehicle with green license plates traveling at a high rate of speed on Cedar Avenue.

A few minutes later, another officer saw the same car speeding on Route 103 eastbound. The officer pulled over the car, which had Vermont registration plates, near New Gardners Neck Road.

Around the same time, police got a report from a driver who said that while on I-195, someone in the same type of car had thrown a bottle at their car, damaging it.

During the traffic stop, officers found an open bottle of liquor near the front seat passenger. Police said the driver was fidgeting and was reaching under his seat for something. After taking the driver out of the car, officers also located a loaded .45 caliber handgun magazine in the driver-side pocket.

Officers also discovered two loaded handguns under the driver’s seat near where the driver was reaching.

During a thorough search of the vehicle, officers found loaded handgun magazines, pepper spray, survival knives that were hanging from the seat, nunchucks, modified brass knuckles, body armor and handcuffs.

All four occupants of the vehicle are from Vermont and said they were on their way to visit a friend in Fall River.

Police said the driver, identified as 30-year-old Eric Poland of Milton, Vermont was arrested and is facing several firearms charges. He was also charged with operating negligently.

The rear passengers, 31-year-old Jon Lamoy, of Milton, VT, and 61-year-old Charles Livingston of Winooski, VT, are also facing several charges.

The fourth passenger, who police said is disabled and is alleged to have thrown the bottle out the window, was released at the scene and will be summonsed into court on several charges.
