FALL RIVER, Mass. (WPRI) — A Fall River man charged in a city murder on New Year’s Day faced a judge Tuesday.

A day after his 25th birthday, Jeffrey Souza was arraigned in court on a murder charge in connection with the killing of 28-year-old Kyle Brady in Fall River. The shooting happened just an hour into the New Year near Maplewood Park.

Prosecutors claim Souza confronted Brady and a conflict ensued, which ended with Souza shooting the victim once in the chest, killing him.

According to witness statements, Souza was covered in blood and went home to change his clothes, where he admitted to his grandmother that he may go to jail for the rest of his life.

Coordinated efforts from Fall River, Newport, and Massachusetts State Police led to Souza’s arrest a few hours later in Newport.

In court, the district attorney used an example out of Souza’s six-page record that originates from 2007 to show that the probation violator can’t be trusted out of jail with a GPS monitoring device.

“Apparently that did not suit him, and he cut the bracelet off and he threw it in the Taunton River.”

Souza’s attorney didn’t fight the Commonwealth’s request to have him held without bail.

The judge also revoked bail on another case pending against Souza. He’s due back in court Feb. 13.
