Suspect in deadly stabbing faces upgraded charge

FALL RIVER, Mass. (WPRI) — A man accused of fatally stabbing another man in Fall River last weekend is now charged with manslaughter.

The Bristol County District Attorney’s office announced the upgraded charge Wednesday against Adam Conners for the death of 39-year-old Joseph Reading.

Conners, 29, and a co-defendant in the case, Mark Costa, 26, are due back in court Friday for a dangerousness hearing. The DA’s office said Conners would likely be arraigned on the manslaughter charge during that appearance.

Police said Reading, Conners and Costa got into a fight in an apartment on Hall Street late Saturday night. Conners is accused of stabbing Reading during the brawl.

Police said Reading then tried to drive off but crashed near Church Street. Officers found him behind the wheel of his car, unresposive and bleeding from multiple stab wounds. He was pronounced dead at St. Anne’s Hospital.

Costa is charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, the DA’s office said.
