CRANSTON, R.I. (WPRI) — A Providence man has been charged in connection with a brutal assault in Cranston.
According to Cranston Police Chief Colonel Michael Winquist, the assault happened in broad daylight Saturday on the corner of Broad Street and Norwood Avenue.
Police received a phone call and responded to the scene just before 11:30 a.m. Chief Col. Winquist confirmed to Eyewitness News that upon arrival, officers found 56-year-old Arthur Porter of Cranston lying unconscious on the ground.
Porter was rushed to Rhode Island Hospital where he is currently listed in serious but stable condition.
“The situation is still fluid,” explained Chief Col. Winquist.
Investigators spoke with witnesses who provided details on the suspect’s getaway car and license plate number. Minutes later, police located the vehicle in Providence and brought Victor Cruz in for questioning.
Cruz, 25, was charged with felony assault after police said he gave incriminating evidence during the questioning.
According to Col. Winquist, this is not a domestic case.
Cruz is being held overnight at a Cranston police department jail.
