PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — A new study revealed that Providence is one of the most expensive cities in the country to say “I do.”
According to Thumbtack, brides in the capital city will spend an average of nearly $14,000 on wedding services, which include the cake and the limo.
When planning a wedding, every decision can feel expensive. It’s even more so in Providence, according to Thumbtack, who placed the city fifth on the list of most expensive cities to hire wedding service providers.
The study found the average cost to hire a band in Providence is about $2,800 and the average cost for hair and makeup is nearly $700.
Thumbtack’s survey didn’t include the venue, the dress, or the rings, but according to ValuePenguin.com, the total average cost to throw a wedding in the Ocean State is about $45,000. Compare that to the national average of $29,858.
“I always say be realistic,” said local wedding planner Christine Ellingwood. “Talk to all of the people that are contributing to the budget, so if it’s parents – what are they contributing? The couple? What are they looking at? They need to be realistic about their budget because it can go out of control and spiral very fast.”
Ellingwood, who works at Planned to Perfection, said there are ways couples can cut costs and still have their dream day.
“Guest count – I think that’s really important,” she said. “I think if you can keep your guest count to a certain number because the highest cost is going to be food and beverage.”
Then, decide what’s most important to you. Would you rather people remember the DJ or the decorations?
According to Thumbtack’s data, hiring an officiant in Providence is the least expensive wedding cost at an average of $211.
