Stolen dog reunited with owner more than a year later

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Sunte Souvannasap never gave up hope.

He’d owned his beloved dog, Barry, a Doberman Pinscher, for just about a year when he was stolen off a Providence street.

Souvannasap said his brother was walking the dog on Elmwood Avenue in May of 2017 when he was mugged. The suspect made off with Barry, and Providence police tell Eyewitness News the dog was reported stolen. Months went by, but Barry was never found.

“That’s my dog, so I’ve got to keep looking,” Souvannasap told himself.

Each day Souvannasap logged onto social media and Craigslist, looking for postings about the dog and spreading the word that Barry was gone, even offering a $1,500 reward.

Then, a break. On the day after Christmas, Souvannasap was making his usual sweep through Craiglist when he spotted a listing out of New Bedford.

“Doberman. Please inquire,” the listing read. “Purebred. Two years old. Very loving!”

The age matched, and so did other identifiers like a scar on the dog’s right front paw and his distinct ears and tail. Souvannasap went to get him immediately.

“I’m 100 percent sure it’s Barry,” he said. “As soon as he saw us he was excited, just started barking and licking us.”

Now the two are getting to know each other again. Man and man’s best friend reunited, just in time for the holidays.

“I’m not a Christmas guy, but I guess you could say, yeah it’s a good Christmas present,” he said.

Souvannasap said the woman who sold him the dog didn’t know the name of the man who sold it to her. He said he’s still trying to piece together what happened to Barry over the past 19 months.

He’s also hoping to raise money for Barry’s expenses.
