MANSFIELD, Mass. (WPRI) – The Massachusetts State Police confirm a man was found dead following a car fire at a rest stop in Mansfield Sunday evening.

Police say numerous 911 calls around 3:45 p.m. alerted them to the car fire in the Mansfield Rest Area on Route 95 northbound prior to Route 495.

By the time troopers from the State Police and the North Attleboro Fire Department arrived on scene, the driver and only occupant of the vehicle had been pulled away from the fire by good Samaritans at the scene. North Attleboro Fire proceeded to extinguish the car fire.

The male driver, who has not yet been identified, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Troopers from the Massachusetts State Police Crime Scene Services also responded, with assistance from the Fire Marshal’s office, and State Police detectives. They are now working to investigate the cause of the fire and the driver’s death.

Boston affiliate WBZ-TV reports the charred car was towed from the scene around 6:15 p.m.

The investigation brought traffic to a crawl on Interstate 95 in the area.
