State officials invite public to test-drive electric cars

NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) — State officials are inviting the public to test drive electric cars during a sailing race in Newport.

It’s part of a new state campaign, “Drive Clean Rhode Island,” to encourage the use of electric cars.

The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management says the campaign kickoff and test drives are scheduled for Saturday morning until 2:30 p.m. at Fort Adams State Park in Newport.

The event features the latest electric cars from Tesla, Nissan, Chevrolet and other manufacturers.

It coincides with the World Match Racing Tour festivities at the park.

Drive Clean Rhode Island events are funded through the John Merck Fund.

The state is also offering purchase incentives for electric cars.
