NEW BEDFORD, Mass. (WPRI) – A fire broke out at a housing complex in New Bedford Sunday, leaving three residents from two apartments displaced.

The fire broke out just after noon at the Parkdale Housing Complex.

New Bedford fire officials tell Eyewitness News they struck a two-alarm response after receiving the call from New Bedford police who were already on scene.

Three engine companies, two ladder companies, and two district chiefs responded to the fire, which was knocked down within fifteen minutes.

A small explosion from a second floor apartment caused the fire. The male homeowner was operating some power tools in the apartment which may have caused the explosion. He was transported to Rhode Island Hospital to be treated for non-life threatening burns.

The second floor apartment where the fire started and the apartment directly below it suffered damage and are uninhabitable at this time. The Red Cross offered assistance to the displaced residents.

The explosion and subsequent fire does not appear to be intentional, and has been ruled accidental pending further investigation.
