BRISTOL, R.I. – Brandeis University spoiled the first game of the New Year for the Roger Williams University Men’s Basketball team, as the Judges came away with a 61-50 win over the Hawks Friday evening.
Brandeis (4-5) picks up its third straight win while Roger Williams (4-6) drops its first contest in three games.
Ryan Palumbo (Warwick, R.I.) dropped in a layup on the first Hawk possession to give RWU a quick 2-0 lead. However, a three-point play John Powell (Ashland, Mass.) put the Judges on top by a point, helping spark a 10-2 run.
From there, Brandeis would hold on to the lead for the remainder of the half. Roger Williams trailed by as many as eight in the period. The Hawks managed to pull back within one with just under two minutes left in the period (28-29), but the Judges ended up scoring one more basket before the end of the half to go into halftime leading 31-28.
In the second half, the Hawk offense stalled early on, putting the team into a hole that they were unable to get out of. Jaylen Jennings (Norwalk, Conn.) scored a basket at the 18:30 mark, but that would be the Hawks’ only points over the following seven minutes. The Hawks followed that with another five-minute scoring drought.
Brandeis used the Hawks’ offensive woes to build a 21-point lead over that span, putting the game out of reach.
Powell led the Judges with 20 points to go along with eight rebounds and two blocks. Jordan Cooper (Weston, Fla.) added nine points and three boards, while Robinson Vilmont (Cambridge, Mass.) chipped in with two points and ten rebounds.
Conor O’Brien (Sharon, Mass.) led the Hawks with a career-high 17 points and six rebounds. Jennings finished with nine points and six rebounds, while Palumbo added five points and five boards.
Roger Williams hosts Eastern Nazarene College on Tuesday, while Brandeis heads to Curry tomorrow.
