Riders break windows to escape after train’s motor overheats

BOSTON (WPRI) — Fire crews responded to the Back Bay MBTA Station Wednesday evening, after a malfunction on an Orange Line train filled the station with smoke.

A MBTA spokesperson tells The Boston Globe that one of the train’s motors overheated. Video posted to social media showed passengers escaping through windows. The MBTA says no injuries were reported.

The incident temporarily halted all commuter rail service through the Back Bay station, including the Providence line. According to the MBTA Twitter page, as of 5:45 p.m., the Providence line was running 25-35 minutes late.
