Richmond Town Council names day after teen who collects toys for needy children

RICHMOND, R.I. (WPRI) — On Tuesday night, town officials in Richmond recognized a teen who has made it his mission to bring the spirit of Christmas to those in need.

The Richmond Town Council honored Chariho High School student Matthew Thayer for his efforts in helping the community.

For the last three years, with the support of his family and the community, Thayer has collected toys for the Rhode Island Center Assisting those in Need (RICAN).

In 2016, when his parents asked him what he wanted for Christmas, Matthew told them he wanted “a toy drive.”

Last Christmas, the “Matthew’s Wish Toy Drive” collected more than 1,500 toys for RICAN.

The Town Council not only recognized Thayer Tuesday night but also declared the second Saturday of December forever be known in town as “Matthew Thayer Day,” since that is the day he annually has a “Community Toy Parade” to distribute the donations received.
