Auburndale, Fla.- Senior righty Dylan Cummiskey allowed five hits and no earned runs in a 3-1 win, while freshman second baseman Shaun Vigeant went 4-for-5 and three runs scored in his debut, as Rhode Island College split with Aurora in the club’s first action of the 2015 season played at the Russ Matt Invitational.
After allowing a run in the first inning of game one, Cummiskey (1-0) settled down and did not allow Aurora (6-2) to score over the next five frames.
The Anchormen (1-1) scored twice in the third inning as junior shortstop Ryan O’Dell (Lincoln, RI) contributed an RBI fielder’s choice and classmate left fielder Joe Yankee (Lincoln, RI) knocked in another with an RBI single. Senior right fielder Pat Rogers (Waterford, CT) gave the hosts an insurance run with a sacrifice fly in the sixth.
Junior Kory Lawrence (Woonsocket, RI) hurled a 1-2-3 ninth to pick up the save (1) as RIC won, 3-1.
RIC jumped out to a 2-0 lead in game two, as O’Dell knocked in one with an RBI single and junior designated hitter Matt Foley (Seekonk, MA) plated the second run with an RBI ground out. Aurora quickly took control of the game with three runs in both the bottom of the first and second to jump out to a 6-2 lead.
Yankee cut the deficit to three runs, 6-3, with a sacrifice fly in the fifth, but Aurora came back with two runs in the home half of the frame to seal the win, 8-3.
Sophomore Jake Murray (Middletown, RI) took the loss (0-1).
In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will play a doubleheader with Stockton on Saturday, March 7 (12:30 p.m.).
