PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Recent reports suggest the struggling retail chain Sports Authority may close all of its stores.

There are more than 450 locations across the country – and as we’ve reported, 140 of them are slated to close.

The others, including three locations in Rhode Island, could remain open, according to a spokesperson for the company.

Bruce Soscia said he rushed to the Warwick Sports Authority location to use a gift card – after hearing about the possible closures.

“I might as well come through and spend it while I can,” he told Eyewitness News.

The sporting goods retailer filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in March. Last week, the company decided to sell rather than reorganize.

In a statement to Eyewitness News, a spokesperson for the company said, in part:

“We have received initial expressions of interest from a number potential buyers, and we are optimistic about the results of the mergers and aquisitions process which runs through the end of May.”

“We continue to move forward with our previously announced plan to close approximately 140 stores. The outcome of the M&A process will determine whether any additional store closings will be required.”

The three RI locations are not currently on the list of stores expected to close.
