PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Rhode Islanders heading to the pump will have to pay a little more going forward when filling up the gas tank.

For the first time ever, the state’s gas tax will be adjusted for inflation.

The tax has risen one penny per gallon, up to a total of 33 cents per gallon across the state.

Last year, lawmakers revised the law for the gas tax to be adjusted every two years based on inflation.
