PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Rhode Island is taking emergency action, to keep the supply of medical marijuana flowing to dispensaries.

The Department of Business Regulation is fast-tracking the creation of a new category of private medical marijuana growers, dubbed “cultivators.”

This is in response to rule changes that take effect at the end of the year, preventing caregivers from providing excess to medical marijuana dispensaries. Regulators are concerned that could lead to a shortage, driving up prices and forcing patients to the black market.
