LINCOLN, R.I. (WPRI) — Rhode Island crowned a new young spelling bee champion on Saturday.

Reigning state bee champion and seventh-grader Christopher Relyea returned to win his second title on his home turf at Lincoln Middle School.

The winning word was “massacre,” after the runner-up misspelled “podiatrist.”

Relyea will now head to the Scripps National Bee in Washington, D.C.

The youngest middle schooler in today’s contest was a second-grader from a Blackstone Valley Prep.

Eyewitness News’ Jared Pliner was honored to return as spelling bee pronouncer.

Congratulations, Christopher!
