CHARLESTOWN, R.I. (WPRI) — Mystic Aquarium’s Animal Rescue Team released a male harp seal into the ocean off the coast of Charlestown Thursday.

“Gilligan” was brought to Mystic on March 20, to be treated for pneumonia.

While in the aquarium’s care, the harp seal also received medication to help manage another ailment.

According to Mystic officials, Gilligan was greeted by a group of roughly 50 supporters at Blue Shutters Beach, who cheered on his return to the sea.

Gilligan’s weight fluctuated during his illness and he weighed approximately 66 pounds at the time of his release.
