PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — It has been three days since the capital city fell below its mandatory minimum number of firefighters on duty. And now, a recommendation has been made from the city council that could help end the ongoing staffing dispute.
The city council president said the department needs a steady hand, claiming a revolving door of fire chiefs has created an aura of animosity between the union and the mayor’s office.
He also said both sides need to cool down.
“I also think it’s incumbent on the public to call on both sides. Let’s disarm ourselves for a second and let’s figure out if we can come back to some fruitful conversations,” City Council President Luis Aponte said.
The city council president also said the council has hired a consulting firm that will offer an understanding of how the entire department should be structured.
