CRANSTON, R.I. (WPRI) – Rhode Island National Guard soldiers are lending a hand in the aftermath of heavy flooding in West Virginia.

The 861st Engineer Support Company was in West Virginia already for annual training and 81 of its soldiers are now assisting the West Virginia Army National Guard with repairing roads and clearing debris, in tandem with the 111th Engineer Brigade.

The unit’s training period is scheduled to end on July 2.

The state is under a state of emergency after historic floods that have claimed 26 lives.
