Providence Violent Crimes Task Force, Boston Gang Unit make arrests

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Providence police arrested several alleged gang members Sunday morning.

The Providence Violent Crimes Task Force and Boston gang unit were surveying an area on Union Street after learning two Boston-based gangs planned to meet for a violent confrontation. Police discovered a Nissan Altima being driven by several people they believed to be members of the Wendover Street gang.

Providence police say they could smell marijuana and pulled the car over.

During a pat down, police discovered ammunition and then found a revolver in the vehicle.

Police arrested the car’s driver, 23-year-old Elton Ribeiro, with carrying a pistol without a license.

Four suspected gang members were arrested in total, including 24-year-old Takari Elliott, who was taken into custody after crashing his car into a police cruiser in an attempt to flee from police. Elliott also faces weapons charges.
