Providence to hold 1st expo to promote summer learning

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — The mayor of Providence is hosting an event to showcase local community organizations that offer diverse, fun and educational summer programs for the city’s children.

Mayor Jorge Elorza will join city officials, Providence Public School District representatives and community partners for the first “Providence Summer of Learning Expo.”

The family-friendly event will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday at the Juanita Sanchez Educational Complex on Thurbers Avenue in Providence.

The expo was organized so parents can speak with many summer providers in one day.

It’s part of a city campaign to address the issue of learning loss during the summer.

Elorza says that low-income and minority students are disproportionally affected. He says he wants to ensure they have access to summer learning opportunities.
