PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) – Some residents are concerned about the amount of rats they’re seeing in their neighborhoods.

Councilman David Salvatore represents Ward 14 and says he’s received about a dozen complaints about the rodents roaming in the Elmhurst section of the city.

He brought up the issue at the Providence city council meeting Thursday night.

“The city does have a responsibility at this point to address these concerns in a timely manner.” Salvatore says, “The city really has to wrap its heads around what the source of this issue is and address the quality of life for these people who live in Providence.”

The councilman is calling on the city and its Department of Public Works to find the root of the problem and fix it.

Salvatore says, “First and foremost, this is an environmental issue. I think anytime we hear of an increased number of rodents in a neighborhood; that certainly diminishes the environmental quality of life of the surrounding neighborhoods.”

Councilman Salvatore points out one possible reason for the rats could be the sewers.

He says the city has to make sure they’re clean and up to date.

A second possible cause could be holes in trash cans, whatever food you don’t want, rats are happy to eat.

“For those neighbors who have pets and they walk them, it’s imperative that they’re cleaning up dog waste.”

There is no timetable on when the problems will be addressed.

Salvatore says he will be keeping his constituents updated on the problem by email.
