PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Providence police are searching for two of three men they say stole a car and crashed it into a pole a short distance later.
It happened around 7:30 a.m. Wednesday.
Providence police Captain Michael E. Correia told Eyewitness News a Kinfield Street resident went outside to warm up his car Wednesday morning. He went back inside his house while his car was still running and saw three men jump into his car and drive away.
The resident jumped into another car and pursued them for a short distance until the suspects crashed his car into a telephone pole at Plainfield Street and Laurel Hill Avenue.
Correia said the driver and front seat passenger ran from the scene, while the passenger in the back seat was seriously injured and taken to Rhode Island Hospital. Police estimate he is in his early 20s.
Police do not have a description of the two suspects that took off, but said no one in the car was wearing a seat belt.
Detectives and BCI were later called to the scene. Police were seen putting up yellow tape and removing items from the car.
