Providence group gathering donations for Haiti

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — A Haiti native who has made Rhode Island his adopted home is heading up a new campaign to send help and money to the country swept by Hurricane Matthew earlier this week.

Bernard Georges, the founder of New Bridges for Haitian Success, says he’s had trouble getting communications through to his family: “I don’t know if everybody’s okay… I’ve been trying to reach out to my little brother for the past two days, and I haven’t gotten in touch. Even my little sister,” he said Thursday.

Georges has lived in Rhode Island for sixteen years, but most of his family still lives in the village where he grew up.

Authorities and aid workers still lack a clear picture of what could be the country’s biggest disaster in years.

But photos that friends sent to Georges make it clear there’s no time to wait — they show damaged structures and flooded streets.

“It’s a very scary time,” he said.

New Bridges for Haitian Success is now collecting materials to sent to needy people: “We just ask people to help us… If they can give bottled water, food, medicine, some clothing, supplies — and money, just for us to send them — so we can hand them over to the right people.”

Georges says as soon as any donations are provided here in Rhode Island he’ll be sending them directly to his partners in Haiti.
