Providence club closed following early morning violence

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) – A Providence nightclub has been shut down temporarily following an early morning shooting.

Police were called to North Main Street around 1 a.m. Saturday. Police told  Eyewitness News one person was taken to the hospital after being shot near Tantric Nightclub.

Officers who were near the scene at the time witnessed the shooting and arrested the gunman. The suspect, 21-year-old Luis DaCosta, was one of three people taken into custody outside of the club.

Police said that although the shooting happened near the nightclub, it’s not clear if the shooter or the victim had been inside.

Providence’s Board of Licenses voted unanimously to close the club for up to 72 hours. They will meet again on Monday to discuss the incident.

At this time, police said they are investigating whether or not the shooting was gang-related.Annie Shalvey contributed to this report.
