PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — Thunderstorms Friday afternoon and evening ripped across southern New England – knocking out power and tearing down tree limbs.

More than 5,000 people were without power as of 10 p.m., many in the Providence area. Since then, the number has dropped to only 200 customers, as of 9:30 a.m. Saturday. For more information on local power outages, see our WPRI.com Power Outage Database »

Friday was also an extremely hot day with a heat advisory in effect. Two local pools are closing this weekend, leaving residents without a place to cool down.
